If we want our children to live in our Bloor Street Neighbourhood - 35 Hayden St., have enough food to eat, and not be poisoned by their environment, we're going to have to make some radical changes in our own lives, starting with replacing the fossil fuels we burn with other alternative fuels. If you're wondering what you might be filling up your car's tank with in the near future, here's a look at some current and future alternative fuels.

Ethanol

Ethanol is one of the most popular alternative fuels out there because modifying a car engine or power plant to take ethanol is much easier than modifying it to be powered by something else. The ethanol that you can already see powering some types of taxi in Toronto is derived from corn. There is some concern about cutting into our food supply to make fuel for vehicles, but so far that hasn't stopped some gas stations from offering ethanol fuel or car manufacturers from designing ethanol fueled models.

Biofuel

Biofuel is a fascinating oil alternative because it is actually made from algae! The same algae that grows on the surface of lakes and ponds can actually be processed and turned into oil very similar to the oil that is currently inside a Pearson airport taxi. Many gasoline and diesel engines wouldn't even need to be modified to accept this type of fuel. Projects for biofuel have already begun, with scientists attempting to modify the algae so they will grow in the ocean instead of on ponds.

Hydrogen

You may think hydrogen is only useful as a lifting gas, but it can be burned as well to power cars and the appliances in Lindsay, Ontario houses. One of the reasons hydrogen is such a popular alternative fuel is that hydrogen is the most common element in the universe. Many cars already run partially on hydrogen. These cars are called Hybrid cars, and may soon be replaced with full on hydrogen cars that fill up from hydrogen stations.

Electricity

The technology for electric cars has been around for decades but was buried under opposition from the fossil fuel companies. Now that 55 Delisle Avenue and other homes are getting green hydro, solar, and wind electricity, electric cars are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to gas and can even be carbon free in some circumstances, unlike the above methods, which are merely carbon reduced.
